NEVER TOO LATE

Another month has begun. A time for new beginnings. A time for a new season with the Autumnal Equinox arriving near the month’s end. It is also a period of renewal and of slowing down after the excitement of summer travel.

My children have now returned to school. All three now in high school, with the oldest a senior and the youngest a freshman. It is an important time in their lives as they prepare for adulthood. For having to take responsibility for the actions they take and the choices they make.

The day also brought about a flashback to my days of high school as I emptied my storage unit. A place where I had stored the many boxes of my belongings from the past as I moved from my old apartment last September. College papers I wrote. Assignments that I still held onto in the classic Pee-Chee folders. Mixed tapes made specifically for me. Old letters and notes from high school. From the days before texting on mobile phones.

As I glanced at some of the writings, I wondered how the things that happened back then have influenced my life now. How the group I associated with influenced my choice of music – even to this day. I also wondered what path my life would have taken had I understood that what I worried about then, did not make a difference in the end.

Sometimes, we put too much pressure on ourselves. We believe things matter more than they do. We forget to smile and laugh as we take life too seriously. At times, we overthink every decision and give importance to things which are unimportant. We listen to everybody but ourselves.

No matter the past, we are still able to change the path we are on. To take a chance on finding that which brings us a smile. To make the effort to create a new path in the dirt of nothingness lying before us, despite the obstacles.

Whatever your age, it’s never too late to have the life you want. But are you willing to do what it takes to get there?
